How Traffic Increased 168% for a Dog Supplement Brand

Chiqui Pangan

By the numbers:

  • 29,632 monthly organic visits
  • +7 DR points
  • 33,203 organic keywords

The global pet industry is valued at an estimated $246 billion, which has spurred multiple companies and niches to compete for a slice of this giant pie. Pet supplements have seen a substantial uptick, especially in the last few years as wellness continues to be top of mind for consumers.

Our customer, an award-winning raw dog food and supplements company, much of their success lies in its strong online presence.

However, even award-worthy brands have room for improvement, which is why the company continues to be proactive in building links, optimizing content, and growing its online authority.

Here’s how we took an already successful brand and more than doubled its organic traffic and keywords to achieve noticeable growth in just 16 months.

The Strategy

Our client gave us plenty to work with. They weren’t a new site, had an established set of keywords and traffic that were already working for them, and sold in-demand products. Still, we knew the power of link-building and strategic keyword usage could get them even better results.

Along with building links, we analyzed anchor text to ensure a mix of exact match, partial match, and generic terms to maintain a natural-looking link profile. We didn’t want to overuse specific keywords, which could have the opposite effect.

The Results

Now in Month 16, our client has seen growth in traffic, DR, and the number of organic keywords. Out of 39.1K keywords, 1.2K rank in Top 3 positions.  More than 4.6K keywords have been added in the last month alone. While we haven’t built links using all of these new keywords, backlinks give search engines context about a site, allowing it to rank for more search terms.

Traffic has also seen healthy growth. Starting with 11,030 monthly visits, the client now earns 32.2K monthly visits. This is a direct result of the increase in organic keywords (more opportunities to rank in more searches) and higher rankings due to an increase in domain authority (41 to 47).

Last Word

Brands that have built a substantial following can use their exposure to maintain their momentum. But for our dog food and supplement client, their current rankings and authority had room for improvement. Even if what you’re doing is working and you’re satisfied with it, the right mix of strategies can turn a good thing into something better.
